How Effective Is a Heat Pump in a Colorado Springs Winter?

Monday, September 19th, 2022

sun-and-snowflake-badgeAs we move into the fall, you’ll start to think about heating your home. This may be the year when you replace your current central heating system with a new one. If this is the case, you may be considering a heat pump in Colorado Springs, CO. Heat pumps handle the job of both heating and cooling a house, making them a good option if you’re looking at replacing an electric furnace and an air conditioning system.

But you may have heard the heat pumps aren’t up to handling extremely cold temperatures like the ones we get here in Colorado Springs. A heat pump in heating mode draws heat from outdoors and moves it indoors, and so conventional wisdom says a heat pump can only work efficiently in milder cold climates. Is this true? Is a heat pump just not viable in our weather?

How a Heat Pump Is Different From an AC

Monday, June 13th, 2022

If you know the basics about heat pumps, then you can probably explain one of the big differences between a heat pump and an air conditioner right away: a heat pump works as both a cooling system and a heating system, where an air conditioner only cools.

However, air conditioners and heat pumps are similar in many ways. They both use refrigerant to work, condensing and evaporating it in two sets of coils, and they have similar components (compressor, blower fan, exhaust fan, condensate drainage) and similar configurations (an interior air handler and exterior cabinet). Outwardly, it’s difficult to tell the difference between them. But there obviously are differences—because a heat pump does two jobs where an AC does one.

So what makes an AC and heat pump different? We’ll take a closer look below.

We Need to Talk About Heat Pump Efficiency Ratings as Well

Monday, July 13th, 2020

Heat pumps are vigorously created with SEER ratings in a similar fashion to air conditioners. Since they technically qualify as air conditioners as well as heaters, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. The interesting part about this information, and why we decided to devote a whole blog post to it, is that these systems require a bit more efficiency calculating than an air conditioner.

Thnk about it. Your heat pump works all year round moving heat from one place to another, while your air conditioner only works on the hot summer days. A heat pump that’s not up to efficiency standards proposed by the government is going to cost you a lot more than an efficient air conditioner. Take it from your Colorado Springs, CO HVAC provider, this is not something to ignore!
