How Effective Is a Heat Pump in a Colorado Springs Winter?

September 19th, 2022

sun-and-snowflake-badgeAs we move into the fall, you’ll start to think about heating your home. This may be the year when you replace your current central heating system with a new one. If this is the case, you may be considering a heat pump in Colorado Springs, CO. Heat pumps handle the job of both heating and cooling a house, making them a good option if you’re looking at replacing an electric furnace and an air conditioning system.

But you may have heard the heat pumps aren’t up to handling extremely cold temperatures like the ones we get here in Colorado Springs. A heat pump in heating mode draws heat from outdoors and moves it indoors, and so conventional wisdom says a heat pump can only work efficiently in milder cold climates. Is this true? Is a heat pump just not viable in our weather?

Watch for These Signs of AC Compressor Trouble

August 22nd, 2022

compressor-in-ac-unitThe heat has dropped significantly since the scorcher weather we experienced at the end of July and in early August. This doesn’t mean that your AC is out of this rough patch of keeping your home cooled down, however. Summer isn’t over yet, and we know that intense heat can strike into the fall.

With this in mind, we want to talk to you about the compressor in your AC. This is the part of your cooling system you want to keep in the best condition. It’s the “engine” of the entire air conditioner, drawing on the most electrical power to perform the job of circulating refrigerant and placing it under pressure. Without the compressor, the AC can’t cool anything and is just a big central fan. Because the compressor is an expensive part to replace, people often choose to replace their whole AC system rather than just the compressor should it fail.

We want to help you with fast air conditioning repair in Colorado Springs, CO, when you’ve got an imperiled compressor. Watch for these signs and call us ASAP to see if we can rescue your compressor (or fix whatever is wrong).

How Long Can You Expect Your AC to Run?

July 25th, 2022

Air-conditioner-recyclingA central air conditioning system is a significant and important investment in any home. Like other home appliances, you hope you’ll get the most years possible from your air conditioner and not have to worry about replacing it for a long time. Sometimes it’s easy to imagine that the cool air will just keep blowing from the AC whenever you need it.

Of course, this isn’t possible. Any mechanical system as hard-working as an air conditioner will wear down over time, even with the best in regular maintenance and targeted repairs. How long can you expect your AC to run? We’ll look into this question, as well as how far you want to push an aging AC, below.

What’s Behind the Rising Cost to Run Your AC?

July 11th, 2022

If you keep a close track on your monthly utility bills, you’ll expect to see electricity use rise in summer. Your air conditioning system consumes a large amount of electricity to run (the compressor consumes about 3,500 watts per hour, more than almost any household appliance), so when the AC becomes a regular part of summer days, it will raise the electricity bill.

But what if the bill goes higher than you expected, and you know that your household hasn’t used the air conditioner more than unusual? If it isn’t due to an increase in the cost of electricity, you may have a faulty AC on your hands.

In many cases, professional air conditioning repair in Colorado Springs, CO can correct the trouble that’s making your AC expensive to run. Our technicians can quickly diagnose the issue and explain what needs to be done to your HVAC system to get it back in cost-effective shape.

Here are some of the more common causes of an AC costing too much to run:

How a Heat Pump Is Different From an AC

June 13th, 2022

If you know the basics about heat pumps, then you can probably explain one of the big differences between a heat pump and an air conditioner right away: a heat pump works as both a cooling system and a heating system, where an air conditioner only cools.

However, air conditioners and heat pumps are similar in many ways. They both use refrigerant to work, condensing and evaporating it in two sets of coils, and they have similar components (compressor, blower fan, exhaust fan, condensate drainage) and similar configurations (an interior air handler and exterior cabinet). Outwardly, it’s difficult to tell the difference between them. But there obviously are differences—because a heat pump does two jobs where an AC does one.

So what makes an AC and heat pump different? We’ll take a closer look below.
